This year Kiara Ijzendoorn from the Netherlands went on vacation to Crete with her family. They rented a car to explore one of the most beautiful Greek islands. But one day on a deserted street they saw something that made them stop.

There was a dog lying on the road. When the family got out of the car and came closer, they saw that the pooch was in pain.

"He had a huge wound on his back. His back was broken and his legs were paralyzed," Kiara recalls.

Stray animals aren't often seen on the streets in the Netherlands, so Kiara and her family first thought that the poor thing belonged to a local resident. They asked the locals about the doggie but only got an indifferent answer that the pooch lived in a barn by the road, and most likely someone had deliberately broken his back. No one really cared about the poor doggie.

The woman felt so sorry for the dog that she couldn't leave him. From that day she would bring him food every day. Kiara named the stray Fos, that means 'light' in Greek.

Despite his terrible wounds and pain, Fos greeted the family happily every day. And when it was time to pack their bags, Kiara realized she could not leave her loyal friend.

The woman took the stray dog to the local animal shelter and officially became his owner. Fos was examined at the vets. The doggie had multiple injuries, therefore, most likely he had been abused in the past. And a few days later, the former stray was already flying to the Netherlands with his new family.

"He is getting better little by little. He can walk a little better now," Kiara says. "But he's still afraid of cats and old people."

Fos's new owners have never regretted their decision of adopting the poor dog. After all, he loves them so much! Thank you amazing people for making a big difference in this pet's world!
