Recently, a new resident appeared at the Auckland Zoo: a mountain lion cub that firefighters miraculously rescued from the fire. A poor thing lost his mom in a fire and was continuously crying.

The lion cub after the rescue

The kitten was immediately taken straight for a check-up to the local vet, who has saved the lives of over thirteen mountain lions over the years. During the medical examination it turned out that the kitten wasn’t even six weeks old and it's weighed barely a pound and a half.

The lion’s cub paws and fur were badly damaged in the fire and its tiny smoke-stricken eyes wouldn't stop tears. Luckily, the x-rays showed that the kitten’s lungs were intact and there were no other serious injuries. It gave hope for a speedy recovery. But the lion cub won't be able to return to the wild for a long time.

The vet washed all the wounds, treated the eyes and dropped the medication. At the moment the kitten is fed on formula, which is fed to him with a syringe. But it wouldn’t be long before he’s eating meat. Now there is every reason to believe that the lion cub will recover and live a full life.
